One of the standard questions you should be asking of perspective roofers is "are you insured". I am going to address the area of liability insurance. Even if the contractor answers yes, there should be a follow up question asked, "does in cover roofing"? There are all kinds of liability policies out there, but only one that specifically covers roofing. Without the correct insurance, if some type of disaster happens and your house is damaged, you would not be covered. Even if the contractor answers yes and says he has roofing liability  insurance, request that you be listed as a cerificate holder and get a hard copy of this. The hard copy should list all of the the areas covered and if roofing is not listed, it is not covered. So my advice to you is to be specific when asking your questions, and accept nothing less than proof in writing from the insurance company.
